Right to truth
About the sense and nonsense of parliamentary inquiry has been much ink flowed.
Since the inquiry about the Heysel Drama in Belgium we are buried under the parliamentary inquiry.
About human trafficking, organized crime, Gladio network, the Gang of Nivelles (two times), Marc Dutroux (also twice), the paratroopers killed in Rwanda, the Great Lakes, Sabena, the murder of Lumumba, the sects, drugs and prescription fraud cases (which is still pending).
The red thread through the inquiry of the past decades is that they are useful 'can', but too often excel in amateurism and that the recommendations long remain a dead letter.
Now we have another one: a parliamentary inquiry on the violation of the separation of powers at the Fortis processes. It was inevitable. If the President of the Court of Cassation in clear language the Prime Minister and Minister of Justice accused of blatant manipulation of the process, including through illicit contacts with a counselor of the Court of Appeal, the parliament, in a law that name dignity, in full play its role as watchdog of the government. And then a parliamentary inquiry is the most appropriate means. But the committee has not yet begun and already the opposition speak in unison about a cover-up.
The majority parties in the government formation already laid down the boundaries within which the parliament will work, is essentially another violation of the separation of powers. Well, the illusion of an independent parliament has been pricked by.

Over de zin en onzin van parlementaire onderzoekscommissies is al veel inkt gevloeid. Sinds de onderzoekscommissie over het Heizeldrama worden we in België bedolven onder de parlementaire onderzoekscommissies. Over de mensenhandel, de georganiseerde misdaad, het Gladio-netwerk, de Bende van Nijvel (twee keer), Marc Dutroux (ook twee keer), de vermoorde para’s in Rwanda, de Grote Meren, Sabena, de moord op Lumumba, de sekten, drugs en de verjaring van fraudedossiers (die nog loopt).
(tijd) - De rode draad door de onderzoekscommissies van de voorbije decennia is dat ze nuttig ‘kunnen’ zijn, maar te vaak uitblinken in amateurisme en dat de aanbevelingen lang dode letter blijven.
Nu krijgen we er nog eentje: een parlementaire onderzoekscommissie over de schending van de scheiding der machten tijdens de Fortis-processen. Die was onafwendbaar. Als de voorzitter van het Hof van Cassatie in klare taal de eerste minister en de minister van Justitie beschuldigt van regelrechte manipulatie van de rechtsgang, onder andere via illegale contacten met een raadsheer van het hof van beroep, moet het parlement, in een rechtsstaat die naam waardig, voluit zijn rol spelen als waakhond van de regering. En dan is een parlementaire onderzoekscommissie het meest geschikte middel. Maar de commissie is nog niet begonnen en de oppositie spreekt al unisono over een doofpotoperatie.
Dat de meerderheidspartijen tijdens de regeringsformatie al de krijtlijnen vastlegden waarbinnen het parlement zal mógen werken, is in wezen alweer een schending van de scheiding der machten. Nu ja, de illusie van een onafhankelijk parlement is al langer doorgeprikt.
CD&V-Kamerfractieleider Servais Verherstraeten haalt in dat verband uit naar de hypocrisie van de paars-groene regeringspartijen die destijds de regering-Verhofstadt I uitmaakten. ‘Toen waren er in het Sabena-dossier meer dan telefonische contacten tussen Luc Coene, de kabinetschef van Verhofstadt, en de voorzitster van de handelsrechtbank. Toch hebben de regeringspartijen erop toegezien dat de onderzoekscommissie-
Sabena die kwestie moest laten passeren’, luidt het. Pikant detail is dat Luc Coene de Belgische hoofdonderhandelaar was bij de verkoop van Fortis aan BNP Paribas.
De oppositie hekelt ook de plannen om eerst een groep experts een verslag te laten opmaken over de inmenging tijdens de Fortis-processen. Die kritiek is onterecht, althans als de onderzoekscommissie op basis van dat verslag nog vrijelijk getuigen kan horen. Specialisten schrijven al jaren dat een degelijk expertrapport een absolute voorwaarde is om een onderzoekscommissie te laten slagen.
De bevolking heeft recht op de waarheid. Heeft de man van 800.000 stemmen ons vertrouwen beschaamd? Gaat de Brusselse justitie echt gebukt onder intriges tussen katholieken en vrijmetselaars? Heeft alleen CD&V boter op het hoofd? Laten we hopen op een politiek straatgevecht waarbij geen enkele politieke familie de andere ongemoeid laat en de waarheid als grootste gemene deler bovendrijft.
